There are dozens of free OCR tools online. Most upload your image to a server, process it there, and return text. Some retain your images for model training. A handful are genuinely private and run in your browser.

We tested eight tools across four categories: accuracy, speed, privacy, and ease of use. Here's the full breakdown.


Our Test Methodology

We extracted text from five screenshot types:

A Note on Privacy

Most free OCR tools that run on servers are free because your usage generates value for the provider — either through advertising, retained training data, or upsell to paid tiers. "Free" server-side OCR rarely means "private."

Browser-based tools like screenshot-to.com process your image entirely on your device. The image bytes never travel over the network. This matters for:
